Despite the bleak employment opportunities in the United States, Europe is offering jobs to Filipino medical and highly skilled workers.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) reported yesterday that Europe has opened opportunities for construction, health, information technology (IT) professionals, hotel and food service workers.

In its "2008 labor market" report, the POEA said the government of France has expressed its intention to hire Filipino nurses and IT workers.

"Under France's new immigration policy, its government is encouraging the entry of Filipino professionals and skilled workers and expressed interest to forge an agreement with the Philippines toward increasing the number of Filipinos in these sectors," it said.

The POEA added that Norway is also open to the entry of skilled workers, particularly nurses, caregivers, and those in computer science.

The government of Norway estimated that it would need about 3,000 health care workers in the next three years.

Denmark, on the other hand, has implemented a green card system that allows highly qualified professionals, including IT specialists, doctors, nurses, statisticians, engineers, mathematicians, physicists, biologists, and geologists, to work in the country. - Mayen Jaymalin/Philstar
